Barbeques Galore, one of Australia’s best-known outdoor and barbecue retailers, is being wound down after a proposed rescue deal failed to save the business.
The company entered voluntary administration earlier this year, but efforts to secure a buyer or complete a recapitalisation deal were unsuccessful. As a result, 62 company-owned stores are expected to close in the coming weeks, with around 500 workers facing redundancy.
The company’s 27 franchise-operated stores are being handled separately under transitional arrangements, meaning the immediate shutdown is focused on the company-owned side of the business.
The collapse is another sign of the pressure facing Australian retailers, with weak consumer spending, rising costs, supplier issues, and failed buyer talks pushing another well-known brand to the edge.
