Israeli President Isaac Herzog has publicly asserted that his family lineage traces directly back to the biblical King David. This assertion was made during a recent interview with American television host Mike Huckabee, where Herzog indicated he possesses knowledge of a genealogical line preserved through rabbis over successive generations.
Despite the historical weight of such a claim, no independently verified scientific evidence has been presented to the public to substantiate it. While family traditions regarding prominent ancestors are common worldwide and hold significant cultural value, they do not automatically equate to scientifically proven biological lineage.
There is currently no credible public evidence that Herzog has released a DNA test specifically intended to demonstrate descent from King David.
For DNA analysis to establish a relationship with a specific historical person, scientists generally require an authenticated biological sample from that individual—or from securely identified close relatives—to serve as a reference. No verified sample of King David’s DNA exists in any public or private repository.
Research has also warned against treating genetic markers as a definitive test of Jewish identity or descent, given the extensive genetic diversity shaped by migration and intermarriage within Jewish communities over centuries.

A biblical royal lineage should not receive an exemption simply because it is difficult—or impossible—to test conclusively with current technology.
