Gina Rinehart has sparked major concern after saying Townsville could become a base for the Israeli military.
Her proposal went beyond general defence investment. She suggested free land near Townsville could be offered to Israelis so they could develop and build advanced war drones and other defence technology in Australia.
That raises a serious national question.
If Australia allows land to be used for an Israeli military-linked base or war-drone production, we are not just talking about jobs or industry anymore. We are talking about the risk of Australia becoming more deeply tied to overseas conflicts — and potentially becoming a target ourselves.
Many Australians will ask a simple question: why should Australian land be used in a way that could increase the danger to our own country?
Townsville deserves investment, infrastructure, health services, and local jobs. But turning part of Australia into a base for foreign-linked military activity is a completely different issue.
At a time of rising global tensions, many people will see this as reckless. Instead of making Australia safer, it could make Australia a target — especially because of Israel’s conflicts and the hostility they generate across the region.
Australians deserve a real public debate before any proposal like this is taken seriously.
