In her own published speech, Rinehart said the plan could encourage Israelis to develop and build advanced war drones, other defence technology and Israeli-style dome systems in Australia.
The proposal was framed as a way to turn Townsville and regional Queensland into a stronger defence and technology hub. Supporters may argue it could bring jobs, investment and new industry to the region. But for many Australians, the idea raises serious questions about priorities, sovereignty and risk.
At a time when families are struggling with rent, mortgages, food prices and basic services, the idea of offering free Australian land to foreign-linked defence projects is not something people will simply ignore.
