U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen has called for Mike Huckabee to resign as the United States ambassador to Israel, escalating a growing dispute over Washington’s response to the treatment of American citizens in the occupied West Bank.
Van Hollen, a Democratic senator from Maryland and member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has accused Huckabee of failing one of the most fundamental responsibilities of an American ambassador — protecting the interests and welfare of U.S. citizens abroad.
The senator has also accused Huckabee of becoming an “apologist” for Israel’s government rather than forcefully representing American interests.
Why Van Hollen is demanding his resignation
The confrontation comes after months of pressure from Van Hollen and other members of Congress over American citizens killed, detained or allegedly mistreated in the West Bank.
In March, Van Hollen led 30 Senate colleagues in demanding an independent investigation into the killing of American citizen Nasrallah Abu Siyam.
According to the senators, Abu Siyam was the ninth American citizen killed in the West Bank since January 2022, and at the time nobody had been held responsible for any of those deaths.
The lawmakers asked a confronting question: how many more Americans would have to die before the U.S. government took serious action to secure accountability?
American detainees have also become a major issue
Van Hollen has also been outspoken about the treatment of Palestinian-American citizens detained by Israeli authorities.
In February, he and other lawmakers demanded accountability over the detention of Palestinian-American teenager Mohammed Ibrahim, who had been held for approximately ten months.
The lawmakers alleged Ibrahim suffered physical and psychological abuse while in Israeli custody and demanded answers from the U.S. government about what action had been taken.
In June, Van Hollen also publicly demanded action after 20-year-old American Sama Safi was detained in the West Bank. He said Israeli authorities had not initially told her family or the U.S. Embassy where or why she had been taken.
Pressure over West Bank violence is growing
The controversy extends beyond Van Hollen.
A group of senior Democratic lawmakers recently accused the Trump administration of contributing to a climate of “impunity and unbridled violence” in the West Bank and demanded stronger action over attacks involving American citizens.
Van Hollen has been among the most persistent voices in Congress demanding investigations and accountability.
His latest call for Huckabee to resign takes that criticism significantly further.
Instead of merely demanding that the ambassador change course, Van Hollen is now arguing that Huckabee should no longer hold the position.
A bigger question about an ambassador’s responsibility
The dispute raises a fundamental question about American foreign policy.
Whatever an administration’s relationship with Israel, should protecting American citizens remain non-negotiable?
For Van Hollen, the answer is clearly yes — and he believes Huckabee’s performance has fallen so far short of that responsibility that resignation is now warranted.
Huckabee and his supporters are likely to strongly reject the suggestion that his support for Israel prevents him from representing American interests.
But with lawmakers demanding answers over the deaths, detention and treatment of U.S. citizens, scrutiny of the ambassador is unlikely to disappear.
The political question now is whether Van Hollen’s demand remains an isolated call — or whether other members of Congress begin calling for Huckabee to go.
