Van Hollen accuses Huckabee of acting as an apologist for the Israeli government rather than forcefully representing American concerns. In June, Van Hollen publicly called for action after 20-year-old American Sama Safi was detained in the West Bank. He noted that Israeli authorities had not initially informed her family or the U.S. Embassy of where or why she had been taken. The controversy extends beyond one senator; a group of senior Democratic lawmakers recently accused the Trump administration of contributing to a climate of impunity and unbridled violence in the West Bank.
