When Donald Trump says he “had” a great relationship with Benjamin Netanyahu, people notice. In politics, tense matters. He did not say he has a great relationship with Bibi now. He said he had one. That small shift in wording may reveal a much bigger political reality: a relationship that once looked unshakable may now be under strain.
The comment becomes even more significant when placed alongside Trump’s criticism of Israel’s conduct in Lebanon. As civilian deaths continue to draw outrage, even a figure long seen as one of Israel’s strongest backers appears to be sending a message that there are limits to how far Washington can go in defending Netanyahu’s decisions. For years, the U.S.-Israel alliance has been treated as untouchable, but public frustration, regional instability and growing international scrutiny are putting that bond under a spotlight.
This does not mean the alliance is suddenly over. America’s military, diplomatic and political support for Israel remains deeply rooted. But it does suggest that the tone may be changing. If Trump is now speaking about Bibi in the past tense while questioning Israel’s actions in Lebanon, it points to a widening gap between personal loyalty and political reality.
The bigger question is whether this is just a temporary rift or the start of something deeper. If even Trump is distancing himself, Netanyahu may be facing a level of pressure from Washington that can no longer be ignored. And if that pressure grows, the future of one of the world’s closest alliances may start to look far less certain than it once did.
