Donald Trump has delivered one of the most humiliating public rebukes Israel has received from Washington in years, and the message was impossible to miss: the US-Israel friendship is no longer being spoken about like an untouchable alliance.
Trump criticised Israel’s handling of Lebanon and Hezbollah, saying too many people were being killed and warning that Israel does not need to knock down entire apartment buildings just because it is looking for one target. His line that “they’re not all Hezbollah” landed like a direct accusation that innocent civilians in Lebanon are being treated as expendable.
The insults did not stop there.
Trump also suggested Syria could do a better job dealing with Hezbollah than Israel, a stunning public slap at Netanyahu’s military strategy. For an American president to say Syria may handle the situation better than Israel is not normal diplomacy. It is a warning, an embarrassment, and a sign that Washington’s patience is running thin.
Then came the Iran angle. Trump spoke positively about the short relationship his administration has had with Iran, while Netanyahu continues to frame Iran as Israel’s biggest enemy. That contrast makes the public message even sharper: Trump appears more interested in protecting his wider regional deal than protecting Netanyahu’s war path.
This follows earlier reporting that Trump exploded at Netanyahu over Lebanon, with the now infamous reported line: “You’re f***ing crazy.” Whether people support Trump or not, the pattern is clear. He is openly criticising Israel over civilian deaths, questioning Netanyahu’s decisions, praising diplomacy with Iran, and suggesting Syria could do better.
For Palestinians, the moment also exposes a deeper double standard. If Trump can now admit too many innocent people are being killed in Lebanon, then why has the same honesty been missing for Palestinians, who have faced years of bombardment, occupation, displacement and global silence?
This does not mean the US-Israel alliance has officially ended. But it does show something has cracked. Trump is no longer just defending Netanyahu. He is publicly embarrassing him.
